For many the company they are working at is entirely a random selection – it happens by accident. It may be the result of a job posting and even if the homework is done the true character of the company isn’t seen until they are hired. Lets face it, it is hard to look past the hiring process and do enough due diligence to get the skinny on the company that is about to make an offer.
Just today I had coffee with a marketing executive who had been recruited from Texas to generate growth in an established Colorado Hi-Tech firm. He was dismayed to find a rigid, immovable management with a viselike grip on the past – and an absent CEO. It was especially hard to know for sure what was in store with a move from another state
This executive found that traditional career transitions risk causing a wrong move – that is only discovered after the move has been made.
